3-Day International Forensic Science Summit: Uttar Pradesh Advances Forensic Leadership

Forensic Science Summit

The International Forensic Science Summit opened at the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Science (UPSIFS) in Lucknow, setting a new benchmark for forensic innovation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the event, accompanied by over 100 experts from India and abroad. This Forensic Science summit marked the third anniversary of UPSIFS, highlighting the state’s growing leadership in forensic science and cybercrime prevention.

The Forensic Science summit showcased Uttar Pradesh’s rapid expansion in forensic infrastructure. With the launch of newly established Drone and DNA labs, plus forensic vans for all 75 districts, the Yogi government demonstrated its commitment to integrating advanced technology into criminal investigations. The most remarkable change over the past eight years is the leap from only four forensic laboratories to twelve active centres across the state—including new facilities in Jhansi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Bareilly, Gonda, Aligarh, and Moradabad. Plans are underway to open six additional labs in Ayodhya, Basti, Banda, Azamgarh, Mirzapur, and Saharanpur, promising even faster and more effective forensic analysis.

Attendees discussed cybercrime, international legal issues, forensic applications, and strategic countermeasures. The Forensic Science summit underscored how training police officers and students in cutting-edge forensic techniques boosts public confidence in the justice system. Enhanced lab capabilities and advanced fingerprint identification systems, such as the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), have driven the efficiency of criminal identification and evidence matching. Uttar Pradesh now ranks first nationally for fingerprint digitisation, with over four lakh prints already in the database.

The new criminal laws—BNS, BNSS, and BSA (2023)—stress recruiting trained forensic scientists, making scientific evidence central to convictions, especially in cybercrime cases. UPSIFS stands out as a premier hub for forensic education, research, and training, lifting youth aspirations for careers in forensic science.

By linking policing with technology and following a zero-tolerance crime policy, Uttar Pradesh is paving the way for a safer, more secure future. The Forensic Science summit highlights the state’s international collaborations, empowering local investigators and building trust in the justice system. As the forensic ecosystem expands, Uttar Pradesh cements its role as a leader in forensic excellence, inspiring other regions to follow suit.
