Parkland formula: 4 mL x body weight in kg x %TBSA of Ringer's lactate in the first 24 hours from the time of the burn, half in the first 8 hours. Superficial (first degree) burns are excluded from TBSA.
For clinical use this is a triage estimate only; fluid resuscitation must be titrated to urine output and haemodynamic response, not to a formula. The Rule of Nines overestimates in children, which is why Lund and Browder exists. In a post-mortem context, TBSA of burning is only one factor and says nothing about whether burns were ante-mortem or post-mortem.
The Rule of Nines divides the adult body into regions of roughly nine percent each, which makes total body surface area burned quick to estimate. Children have proportionally larger heads and smaller legs, which is what the Lund and Browder proportions correct for.
The Parkland formula then gives fluid resuscitation volume: 4 mL of Ringer's lactate per kilogram per percent TBSA over 24 hours from the time of the burn, half of it in the first eight hours.
