Haemorrhage classes follow the ATLS scale: Class I under 15%, II 15-30%, III 30-40%, IV above 40%.
A pool is a poor measure of blood lost. Blood soaks into flooring and clothing, dries and contracts, is diluted by other fluids, and spreads differently on every surface. Treat this as an order-of-magnitude estimate only; it is not a medical determination of blood loss.
Total blood volume is estimated from body weight, conventionally 70 mL per kilogram in an adult and higher in children and neonates. A pool's volume follows from its dimensions, treating it as a shallow slab, since one cubic centimetre is one millilitre.
The result is expressed against the ATLS haemorrhage classes so the figure has clinical context, but a pool is a poor proxy for blood actually lost.
