Dharmasthala Burial Case Takes a Shocking Turn with New Forensic Evidence

Dharmasthala Burial Case

What began as whispers on social media has evolved into one of India’s most significant and sensitive forensic investigations. The serene temple town of Dharmasthala in Karnataka’s Western Ghats is now the focus of a growing case involving allegations of mass graves, with victims said to include women and minors.

Key Findings From Forensic Excavations

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is uncovering a chilling trail of evidence across dense forest patches near Dharmasthala. Over 10 excavation sites have been examined as of early August, with sites 6 and 11 yielding breakthrough discoveries. At Site 6, investigators found a complete male skeleton and several bone fragments alongside personal belongings, including PAN and ATM cards, which could assist in identifying the victims.

Site 11 proved even more critical. Around 80 meters from its marked location, SIT recovered a human skull, multiple bones, a knotted saree, and men’s slippers. These items suggest possible violent deaths, maybe through strangulation. However, the varied depths and scattered locations of the remains have complicated the process, raising calls for advanced forensic methods like Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) which, unfortunately, remains delayed due to resource shortages.

Current Developments in the Investigation

All recovered items are being analyzed for DNA and forensic examination at Karnataka’s Forensic Science Laboratory, where experts estimate a 2-3 month timeline for results due to the large volume of evidence. Meanwhile, the case has sparked widespread public and media interest, drawing journalists and YouTubers to Dharmasthala. Clashes between residents and the media have resulted in multiple injuries and FIRs, adding to the already tense atmosphere.

The SIT remains tight-lipped, confirming recoveries but withholding details about potential victim numbers or causes of death. Their caution and methodical approach underscore the sensitivity and legal intricacies of the case.

A Landmark for Forensic Justice in India?

The Dharmasthala burial investigation has already become a focal point for discussions about forensic justice in India. As the nation watches and debates, pressure mounts on officials to ensure a transparent and credible outcome. With its political sensitivity, widespread media coverage, and the haunting evidence uncovered so far, this case is poised to serve as a milestone in forensic investigations.
